Report

The week started off a little cold due to the northly wind, however towards the end of the period the temperatures had increased massively. This saw the fishing improve with some great catches on buzzers and some excellent evening rises to dries through the middle. A total of 388 anglers visited the site catching a total of 1424 trout for a weekly rod average of 3.67. The best tactics overall have been to fish with Di 3 sinking lines with a combination blobs and boobies. Buzzers, either fished under the or straight lined, have produced great catches. Finally, we have also seen some great rises and reports of fish coming to dry flies.

On Monday a bright blue-sky day teamed with a northly wind made the fishing tricky. Nevertheless, boat angler Rod Wilson did well fishing on the rudder with a Di 7 sinking line with a gold and silver tube to land 12 fish. Rod’s best spot was fishing over N buoy near Musborough Shoal. Jim Marriott fished all along the North Shore in a boat to land 5 fish. His best tactic was to use a hot head buzzer 12ft under a bung, before landing some fish on dries later in the day. On the bank for the last four hours Peter Bierenacki and Jarod Burton enjoyed good sport on dries to land 3 and 4 rainbows respectively.

A sunny day with the winds remaining in the north made once again for challenging conditions for the anglers out on the water on Tuesday. David Cole fished the boats to land 8 while his boat partner boated one and a perch. On the bank Season Ticket holder Paul Walker landed 5 all on buzzers from the Cornfield. Russell Swinbourne used buzzers to land 14 rainbows from along the main Draycote Dam wall then found fish in Toft during the afternoon. The McIntosh party, down for a short break for Scotland, enjoyed the best of the sport landing 44 between the 7 of them. All their fish came from Toft on buzzers and damsels.

Wednesday saw another cool day due to the Northly wind with some severe gusting. Mr Smart landed 4 fish on buzzers fishing in car parks 3 and 4 on the Cornfield. Colin Granger also fished along the Cornfield to land 5 fish on buzzers. On the boats season ticket holder Pete Fisher enjoyed great sport landing 23 fish on a gold headed mayfly nymph on the point with black and red buzzers on the droppers fished on a floating line. Pete found the fish in Biggin Bay and near the Overflow. Another season ticket holder getting into the action was Tony Parker and partner David Holroyd who landed 45 fish to the boat all on buzzers from Toft, Biggin Bay and Rainbow Corner. David East and Tony Broadway enjoyed good sport on the boat landing lovely silver fish back drifting with a di 7 and tubes. The pair found the bets area to be X buoy and going over Musborough Shoal. Alan Guest and Andy Dowell used the rudder with very similar tactics to land 12 fish to the boat in their afternoon session.

Thursday was a warm sunny day with the winds remaining in the North with just a hint of Easterly. Ed Douglas landed 13 on buzzers and dries. Ed used buzzers fishing over Lincroft Shoal in the morning before switching to dries in Dunn’s Bay during the evening. Simon Hill and members from the police team enjoyed good sport landing 24 between the 4 of them with the best of the sport coming from down the Farnborough Bank wall using a mix of buzzers and blobs. In- house guide Lee Henfrey took to the water once more with John O’Hara. Lee continued his great guiding record this year with another 20 plus fish haul for John. The pair fished around the outlet for the treatment works in the morning before moving to the Farnborough Dam in the afternoon. The best tactic being either buzzers fished under the bung or a blue flash damsel booby fished on a midge tip. [To book Lee for a Guided session please call the lodge on 01788 812018 and speak to Guiding and Tuition Manger Tom Bird to book a slot]. The boats of Mr A McKenzie with partner Robertson and Chambers and McGill, also enjoyed fantastic sport landing 44 fish and 35 fish to the boats on gold head buzzers fished in Toft.

Another warm sunny day with light winds greeted anglers on Friday. Barclays held their annual boat competition with 24 rods landing a total of 101 trout representing a rod average of 4.2. The best tactics in the match were buzzers and nymphs fished in Toft and Rainbow Corner on a Di 3 line. Season Ticket holder Peter Elliott landed 17 rainbows with the first 4 coming to dries early and the rest later on buzzers. Peter fished around Toft and Rainbow Corner. Martyn Moore also enjoyed a great days buzzer sport on Toft using deep buzzers. He fished from an anchored boat to land 26 good rainbows & some very large perch. Dry fly lover Kevin Rees kicked off his boat season in fine form landing 16 fish all on Bob’s Bits. Eileen Chatwin also used dries to land 12 from Biggin Bay. Richard Pelly came for the last four hours to take advantage of the evening rise and landed 7 on Big Red’s. Ian Reeve and Chris Aubrey fished in Toft to land 18.

Bright and flat calm all day where the conditions that greeted anglers Saturday. It was certainly a day for the sun cream. Dave Adams used buzzers to land 10 fish from Toft and D & J Craig landed 14 between them also on buzzers but from Lincroft Point. John Pearson and J Warwick fished the last four hours to land 14 fish on dries and buzzers. Messrs R & N Ring fished orange buzzers in Toft to boat 21. Another angler getting into good sport on the buzzer was Richard Reeve who fished for the afternoon to land 13 fish.

Yet more sun with winds in the East (when there was any breeze) on Sunday. Keith Harding and Mike Clarke enjoyed good sport on buzzers fished under the bung over Lincroft shoal in the morning before moving to the Overflow later in the day. Laurence Foster and boat partner D Webb fished along the Cornfield and Rainbow Corner to land 26 on buzzers and nymphs. Mr Gourlay landed 25 fish from Lincroft Point and down the Cornfield using blobs on a Di 3 sinking line. Out on the boats Jim Smith and Ed Douglas had a cricket score day with over 70 fish to the boat catching on a variety of methods and areas. Starting the day at Lincroft Point on washing lined buzzers they caught well before moving onto the shoal once again catching well. After this they moved up towards the top dam wall catching on buzzers, and also a gold arsed cat booby fished on a di 3. The pair also found this method working in the corner of the Hensborough bank before finishing off on dries through the middle.

Looking forward to coming next week, the good weather looks set to continue with temperatures into the 20s for most of the period.  This will continue to increase the water temperature and hopefully provide even more top of the water sport.

Report

Overall, we have had a good week regarding the weather with some lovely warm days teamed with light winds. This has created some fantastic buzzer and dry fly sport. A total of 380 anglers visited the fishery during the period landing a total of 1374 trout for a rod average of 3.6 for the week.

Monday saw lovely warm over 20°C day with sun for the morning with cloud building late in the afternoon. Out on the boats Mr E Wilson and boat partner A Masters enjoyed some great buzzer sport from Biggin Bay and Dunn’s landing 18 fish to the boat all on black buzzers fished on a floating line. Season ticket holders Jim Brennan & Chris Discombe also enjoyed good buzzer sport down in Toft using very skinny black buzzers. Chris Aubrey and Ian Reeve fished both Biggin Bay and Toft using buzzer to boat 13. Keeping it in the family Ian’s son Richard fished from another boat to land a dozen rainbows on buzzers. On the bank Martin Hancox fished the last four hours to land 4 from Toft. Nick Osbourne took to a boat for the last four hours and landed 8 fish. All came to buzzers from Biggin Bay with three of his trout coming in the first three casts!

A mostly sunny day on Tuesday with 13mph west south west winds and cloud rolling in later in the day. Jude Tuffs fished the bank to land 8 rainbows with 6 coming in the morning to buzzers fished under the bung before taking a couple more later in the day pulling lures. Ian Shobbrook fished the bank to land 3 in the morning using buzzers in the deep water. On the boats season ticket holders Colin England & Tony Plummer landed 12 fish using buzzers in Biggin Bay. Out in the middle fishing the rudder Rod Wilson had a fantastic day’s sport. He boated over 20 fish using gold and silver tubes on a di 7-sinking line, with the best being a 4lb rainbow.

Sunny start to the day Wednesday with cloud building in the afternoon around 2pm, light south westerly winds around 12mph which grew in strength slightly as the cloud pushed in. On the bank fishing at the Swan’s Nest Derek Brooks enjoyed great sport landing 12 on buzzers. Pete Fisher fished further down into Toft using a team of nymphs and also landed a dozen. Mr Swinbourne boated 16 rainbows all on Buzzers from various areas of the lake. However, Rainbow Corner was his most productive location. Guiding & Tuition Manager Tom Bird took to the water on a day off with boat partner Cameron Rothwell & the pair landed over 40 fish to the boat between them. They found a good head of fish in Biggin Bay during the morning and then Toft in the afternoon, before going back to Biggin later on in the day to catch on dries. Their best tactic was to use a floating line with a team of buzzers and a small blob on the point. Season ticket holder Ed Douglas was also back out on the water & landed 20 fish, with 5 coming in the morning using buzzers over Croft Shoal before landing 15 late on in Toft on dries. The crippled midge was Ed’s best pattern teamed up with a Big Red. In house guide Lee Henfrey took John O’Hara out with John enjoying some more fantastic buzzer & he too landed over 20. The pair found the fish in Biggin Bay and Toft. John has found some real success on his guiding days with Lee this year boating over 20 fish a trip. To book Lee for a guiding session call the lodge on 01788 812018.

Thursday was bright and breezy with the winds remaining in the south west which made the buzzer fishing trickier that it has been on previous days. Nevertheless, Joe McGuigan used CDC shuttlecock buzzers to land 9 fish from over the shoals as well as in Rainbow Corner. David Holding & Geoff Brooks enjoyed good sport from the boat landing 12 fish in the morning session. Fishing along the north shore from Biggin Bay to Toft 50 yards from the bank on small dancers and blue flash damsels pulled on intermediate lines. Season Ticket holders Paul Mitchell and Dave Kennel found the fish willing to take in Biggin Bay in the afternoon to land 17 fish to the boat on washing lines nymphs. Mike Gillett and Colin Campbell landed 26 fish to the boat all on buzzers in Biggin Bay breaking the trend of difficult buzzer fishing.

A very chilly southerly gusty wind whipped across the reservoir Friday making it a cold day on the water, however, this did not stop some good catches. On the bank Mark Braun landed 8 fish from the Swan’s Nest on buzzers and pheasant tails. Pete Allan also fished at the Swan’s Nest to land 13 on washing lined buzzers. Out on the boats Martin Moore opted for Toft using a team of Buzzers to land 16 fish. Using buzzer in Rainbow Corner and Toft Gary McGinlay & Mr Pelini landed 32 fish. Using yellow owls and big reds Joe McGuigan had a field day landing 23 frainbows all on the dries at A buoy. He commented that the area it “teeming with fish”.

A warm calm day Saturday with a light ripple picking up in the afternoon before a very wet finish. On the bank Peter Elliot fished the Swan’s Nest with a team of buzzers to land 14 fish, Peter commented that the fish were only a rod length from the bank. On the boats Ian Ross and season ticket holder Mike Garner land 10 on buzzers and Diawl Bachs from both Toft and Biggin Bay. Another season ticket holder getting into the action was Jim Smith who used dries all day to land 12. His catch included a cracking 5lb rainbow. Jim moved around constantly looking for moving fish to intercept found his best pattern to be the Big Red. Ian and Carl Malpass also experienced fine sport netting a total of 29 on a mixture of dries or the washing line – with a cat booby being the top pattern on the washing line.

Sunday was another day of light winds with some sporadic cloud around in the morning until more consistent sun broke through around 11am. Out on the boat Mr Critchley enjoyed great sport using buzzer under the bung to great effect landing 22 fish with the majority taking the buzzer 3ft down. Most of his sport was had in Toft Shallows. On the bank Mr J Burton landed 17 fish on a intermediate line and a white and brown squirrel zonker. Mr A Bremner landed 15 fish all on buzzer from Toft. Mr B Dillon and L Horner landed 22 fish from the boats fishing around Toft and Biggin Bay. Out on the boats Guiding and Tuition Manager Tom Bird took Mr Cotworthy out for a 4 hour guide while down on a break from Scotland. He landed fish on dries and washing line tactics in Biggin Bay and out in the middle. To book Tom for a guided session call the lodge on 01788 812018 or visit www.flyfishtuition.co.uk/prices

Thornton Fly Fishers also visited on an “Away Day” on Sunday and our congratulations go to John Kirk who caught & released their best fish – a magnificent five pound plus brownie which succumbed to a bright yellow lure fished deep off the Farborough Dam. Richard Pelly rounded off the day with a last four-hour permit in the boat. He enjoyed a good evening rise in the middle with five rainbows to the boat on his Big Red patterns.

Draycote Water Fishing report w/e Sunday 6th May 2018.

Telephone Number 01788 812018

Report

A mixed week here at Draycote, starting with windy cold days, which then by the Friday changed to lovely warm calm days perfect conditions for fishing buzzers and enjoying the sun. a total of 318 rod fished Draycote this week catching 1900 trout for a weekly rod average of 5.98.

Monday kicked off with a strong North Westerly wind, which put off most anglers from venturing out. However, Alessandro Piccioli and a party of three other traveling anglers from Belgium did head out in boats. Between the four of them they landed 23 trout. The best tactics the anglers found were to fish buzzer along the North Shore with Biggin Bay and the Cornfield being the hotspot in the morning before a move down to Toft in the afternoon produced the goods for them on the buzzers.

Another windy day Tuesday but this time with the winds coming from the west. This made fishing the bank very tricky with a lot of seasoned Draycote bank anglers recording nil. The boats faired better with Dom Muddier and Matt Osbourne fishing along the deep water near the Draycote Dam and B buoy. Using 5 inch per second sinking lines and olive snakes and blue flash damsels to land 15 fish between them including two lovely rainbows of 3lb 13oz & 3lb 3oz. The best catch of the day was recorded by Mr R Swinbourne who boated a fantastic 37 fish all on small dark buzzers fished along the dam wall near Rainbow Corner. Mr Swinbourne also landed a lovely 4lb brown which he returned to fight another day.

A very wet start Wednesday with heavy rain up until lunch, after this it brightened to a lovely afternoon. With winds coming from the west before swinging into the North West and dropping in strength to go with the clearing skies. Out on the boats Mr Lawrence & Mr Sutton landed 8 fish to the boat fishing in Biggin Bay and Dunn’s on a team of buzzer on a floating line. Also using a team of nymphs to great success was Edgar George and Nigel Evans who fished all along the North Shore to land 13 fish between them.

An improved day regarding the weather saw the rod average increase to 6.6 on Thursday. Light westerly winds meant that most of the bank was fishable, fishing on the Swans nest Ian Richardson landed 11 fish all on small green sleeve diawl bachs fished on a long leader on a floating line. On the boats R Ballie and Mr Reeks landed 22 fish between them on a mixture of snakes and buzzers from Toft. Gordan Bramwell & K Cooke fished in Rainbow Corner to land 56 between them all on buzzers the buzzer of choice was a black buzzer with a small red tag at the back. Neil Picken and Graham Harks landed 27 fish using teams of nymphs from various spots around the lake, including Toft and Rainbow Corner.

Near perfect conditions of warm overcast and a light south westerly winds meant for some great buzzer fishing Friday. George Smith fished the bank at Swans nest to land 15 fish in a morning. Further down the bank towards the Willow Tree, Mr Day landed 27 fish on a mixture of nymphs, blobs and damsels. With the majority of fish coming in the morning. Also fishing at the Swans Nest season ticket holder Tony Broadway landed 12 fish on cormorants and a blob. Another season ticker holder catching well from the bank in Toft was John Dews who landed 21. Fishing down in Toft from the boat Mr More landed 42 fish all on buzzers. Down from Scotland Steve McGregor and a party of three other anglers fished there first of three days with the 4 anglers landing 54 fish between on snakes and buzzer from rainbow corner and Toft, with Mr Carns landing a lovely 5lb 4oz rainbow on a buzzer in Rainbow Corner.  Out on the boats Dave Kennel and Paul Mitchell enjoyed some great sport landing 37 fish using a midge tip washing lining buzzers with a small FAB on the end they found fish all along the Farnborough Dam after the spit drifting down to Toft and then all down the Cornfield and through the middle of Toft. On the bank along the Cornfield season ticket holder Paul Walley and Paul Walker enjoyed great sport on buzzer landing 26 and 32 each. Out the water Draycote Fly Fishers held a fundraising match organised by Paul Farrell for “Help The Heroes”. All 13-boats enjoyed great sport with various catches of over 20 fish a man and even over 30 fish a man on buzzers and nymphs fish either on floating lines or midge tips. In house guide Lee Henfrey took to the water for an 8-hour guide with regular client John O’Hara. Under Lee’s watchful eye John landed over 40 fish to the boat on a mixture of damsels and then olive buzzers in the afternoon. The sport was that good John even had to put the complimentary deli lunch on hold as he could not stop catching fish. To book a guided day at Draycote please visit http://www.flyfishtuition.co.uk/guiding/ or call the lodge on 01788 812018 to speak to Guiding & Tuition Manager Tom Bird.

Bright sun and hot temperatures Saturday teamed with very light to no winds looked like it might but a stop to the good fishing that had been experienced the last two days however this was not the case. With the great buzzer fishing continuing, Nigel Evans fished with a party of Ex-navy services who all enjoyed great sport on buzzers from Toft and around the outlet on buzzers. Steve McGregor’s party enjoyed good sport landing into double figures down the Cornfield and Biggin Bay. Coppenhall Fly Fishers fished a boat match Saturday, with several good catches coming from Toft and Biggin Bay on snakes and buzzers. However, the overall winner of the match was Mick Laycock who used dries through the middle to catch better fish who’s 4 fish bag went 10lb 12oz.

Another hot flat day Sunday with temperatures more than 20°C, although despite these hot bright conditions it didn’t stop the fish from pulling back. On the back Marcus Hickman landed 8 fish from Biggin Bay on buzzer fished on a floating line. On the boats Ian Gaskell and Ken Hardy enjoyed great sport with over 30 fish to the boat fishing buzzers either straight lined or on a washing line. The found fish through Toft in the morning with Ken landing a lovely silver 3lb rainbow. Before a move to Biggin Bay and Dunn’s resulted in prolific sport on the buzzers with double hook ups. Also catching well was Robert Ball’s part of two boats who landed 48 fish between the four of them on buzzers. Once again the McGregor party who fished in Biggin Bay using buzzers to land 32 fish before an early finish to head up the road to Scotland. Paul Davison used dries through the middle in the afternoon to land well into double figures.

Sunday also saw the third year of the ever-popular RIO & Sage day with both bank and boat sessions available for people to try the latest RIO line or Sage Rod. It was great to see many anglers getting casting advice of Simon Gawesworth from RIO and Jim Fearn for Guide Fly Fishing, as well as being able to try specific tackle. Out on the boats the guides Tom Bird, Lee Henfrey, David Hoppe and Martin Rowson. Got the participants into fish during their 1 ½ hour guided session while offering advice on fishing and information on the tackle being tried. The guides caught fish on a mix of straight line and washing line buzzer tactics from Biggin Bay, Toft and the Inlet.

Fishery Management UK Ltd Stocking Further Update.

As previously reported, our trout suppliers have been in touch to update us that due to the extreme cold, wet & wintery weather conditions experienced during late February & March they have struggled to achieve sufficient growth rates to bring enough stock up to the 2lb+ (900g) trout size for our Draycote stockings booked during early April.

They have since advised that given improved weather conditions & temperatures, farm fish are now feeding well & packing on the desired weight. As a result, it is anticipated that things will be back to normal within a few weeks and our policy of introducing all our Draycote stock in the 2lbs+ range will be back on schedule.

Draycote Water Fishing report w/e Sunday 29thApril 2018.

Telephone Number 01788 812018

Report

Draycote has experienced a week of extremely windy, often wet conditions which made things difficult for all concerned. It proved to be something of a contrary period with many anglers struggling for a take, whilst others returned with good results. Winds have been strong at times and blowing from the south which frequently made conditions on the North Shore uncomfortable for the boat anglers & all but impossible for the bank anglers, who were also forced to contend with muddied up margins from the waves. Thus, anglers have had to be on their toes to find the fish. Rainbow corner, although very sporadic, did produce some good catches as the week went on, as did the near side in toft, from the Swans nest down to the big willow tree. Fish have generally fallen to either one of two methods from both boat and bank, either fast sinking lines with tube flies, blobs and boobies, or a slow intermediate/ midge tip and buzzers.

A total of 294 anglers caught 978 fish giving us a weekly rod average of 3.3.

A cold start to the week with low cloud teamed with gusty winds, however the day did remain dry. On the bank season ticket holder Ian Richardson landed 5 fish on a mixture of Damsels and Diawl Bach’s from the Swan’s Nest. Out on the boats visiting French anglers Gullernin Cauhrent and Fontaine Hecve landed 10 fish to the boat in Rainbow Corner on Damsels. Taking top honours for the day were rudder men Rod Wilson & Jim Dempsey who fished along the Draycote Dam on Di 7 sinking lines on tubes to land 34 fish to the boat with all the fish taking at 12ft down and included some lovely silver bars.

Light rain all day did keep some anglers away, but it didn’t seem to have any negative effects on the fish. Bob Smith landed 15 fish from the Swan’s nest on a mix of Damsels and Diawl Bach’s. Also fishing in Toft just down from Bob was season ticket holder Colin Granger who landed 7 fish on black buzzers and Diawl bachs, Colin also lost several fish. Out on the boats Eugene Hughes and Gary Owen landed over 20 fish to the boat on snakes and hot head lures on sinking lines from various areas around the reservoir with Toft and the Cornfield.

A bright start Wednesday, which started with light winds however they soon built to quite a strong Westerly. On the bank Jude Tuffs landed 6 fish from the Willow tree in Toft on buzzers. Due to the wind most of the boat opted to fish in Rainbow Corner and it turned out to the be correct move. On the boats visiting Irish anglers Raymond Flynn and Kevin McQuire landed 14 and 12 fish each all on buzzers on a floating line with a 15-18ft leader. Another angler using buzzers to great affect was Mr Swinbourne who landed 23 fish all on buzzers on a floating line, including some lovely overwintered fish.

The winds that had started to strengthen has the day progressed Wednesday had grown in strength throughout the night leaving a very windy day Thursday. As a result, the fishing was tricky especially from the banks as the hot spots from the previous days had become almost unfishable due to the wind. That not only made it difficult to get a line out but also had clouded the banks up. The boats however, did fair slightly better with 4 out of the 7 Irish anglers here on a 3-day break hitting double figures. Once again, they found the fish in Rainbow Corner on buzzers, the Irish lads found that the best team was to use an olive buzzer on the point teamed with small size 12 black buzzers on the droppers. Also, on the water were West Midlands Police for a social day before the inter-service friendly on Friday. A few their boats did venture down to the rough water in Toft, being rewarded with fish coming to buzzers and lures fished on sinking lines.

A fantastic day for ducks Friday with rain all day long which altered from either drizzle or heavy downpours. Although despite the waterproof testing conditions the conditions had improved from the day before with light winds coming from the north. On the bank regular Brian Warwick landed 4 fish from the Cornfield on buzzers. Once again taking to the water were West Midlands Police in their inter-service friendly the 11 anglers landed a total of 62 fish for a rod average of 5.2 fish per man. Top rod on the day was Steve Owen who landed 14 fish all on buzzers fish on a floating line along the Cornfield.

A cold start Saturday with rain and a chill from the Northerly wind. Mr M Braun enjoyed good sport from the bank landing 11 fish from car park 4 along the cornfield all on buzzers. Out on the boats the rudder men once again enjoyed good sport with Ifor Jones and Jim Dempsey landing 10 fish apiece fishing on di 7 lines and tubes. Also doing well from the boat were Ian Gaskell who fished with Bob Fitzpatrick with the pair boating 16 fish. The pair found either a black buzzer fish at around 11ft or dries targeting surface feeding fish the most productive method, with the areas being Toft, Biggin Bay on the buzzers then across the middle around X buoy for the surface feeders. Peter & Chris Orpin used size 14 olive buzzers near the Draycote Dam fished on a 15ft leader to land 14 fish to the boat. Also, out on the boats a group of friends from the North of England organised by Graham Bell made the trip for a weekend social. In the party John Brown and Andy Campbell enjoyed great sport landing 42 fish on various snakes and lures fished on sinking lines from Toft, Biggin and along the cornfield.

Season ticket holder Rodger Kerrison held a small catch and release competition between some friends Saturday and had written this small section on the day.

“A very cold, wet and windy Saturday saw fourteen local fishing buddies fished a friendly barbless hook catch and release match using the measuring tubes supplied by the fishery, giving us the opportunity to enjoy a competitive day, catch and safely return all 43 fish to fight another day.  The competition was won by Mitch Brown with 8 fish measuring 330cm, and the big fish prize went to Jeremy James with a very impressive brown trout of 54cm, the rod average of just over 3 fish reflected the conditions. Many thanks to Ifor Jones and the Draycote staff Alan, Tom, Kev, Paul and Lee for their hard work and tactical advice and supplying a fleet of clean and tidy boats and most importantly a good stock of hard fighting trout”

For fully catch & release competitions we have purpose made measuring troughs with competition catch & release permits costing £14.00 call the lodge for details

An increase in wind speeds made for a gusty cold day on the water. Season ticket holder Paul Walley fished along the cornfield on small size 14 black buzzers to land 20 lovely trout. On the boats George Leaton enjoyed great sport landing 11 fish from Toft on Damsels. Also fishing down in Toft was season ticket holder Ricard Walker who landed 10 fish all on buzzers. Neil Deakin used friendly tubes fished on a sinking line to land 12 cracking fish from Toft, Biggin and across the middle. However top honours on the day went to the boat of John Hood and season ticket holder Ed Douglas who fished buzzer on a midge tip wo land 34 fish to the boat, the pair found the best area was croft shoal and most of the fish took on the hang with the buzzers at around 10-15ft.

Looking ahead to next week, the weather is due to come warmer towards the end of the week with light winds forecast. Which looks good for some great buzzer fishing on our RIO/Sage day Sunday 6th May.

Draycote Water Fishing report w/e Sunday 22nd April 2018

Telephone Number 01788 812018

Report

Yet again, a week of weather extremes reflecting the need for a period of settled seasonal spring warmth. The start of the week saw anglers contending with cold, showery conditions combined with very strong south westerly winds. However, by mid-week these had given way to a mini heatwave with clear skies, bright sunshine and soaring temperatures, culminating in the hottest recorded April day in seventy years! A night of thunder & lightning with torrential rain on Saturday heralded the return of a much colder airflow with significant drops in temperature. At times sport was therefore best described as “challenging”, with some accomplished rods not being able to induce a single take. However, as ever, the highlights of the week were superb with the buzzer hatch in full swing & fish gorging themselves on the pupae. The period saw 388 anglers visit the venue netting 1545 trout representing a weekly rod average of 3.98

Monday started the period off with cold SW winds which saw a drop in the rod average to 2.3 from a high 5.6 the previous day. Nevertheless, Paul Walker bank fished and took 7 to a mix of damsels & buzzers. Ian Richardson also fished the same patterns on the bank in Biggin Bay to land 5. In the boat David & Mike Mee had to work for their combined 8 fish tally which came to diawl bachs & booby on a Di5. Tuesday was to prove harder still with just a 1.3 rod average. Some experienced regulars struggled for takes & had to concede to a blank day.  CJ Day persevered with his buzzer & nymph set up to bring one good rainbow to the net for the pot with a further 9 caught & released. Brian Allwood also managed to get into fish with five landed & another four lost in play. A lighter southerly 10-12 mph wind on Wednesday with overcast skies, but many anglers still found it hard going on both boat & bank. Rod Wilson did find wintered fish amongst his 8-fish total which included a brace of rainbows tipping the scales together at an impressive 8lbs 2oz. He covered deep water with tube flies presented on a Di7 sinking line. Peter Fisher also boat fished & noted the quantities of buzzer hatching but found takes hard to come by. He persisted with gold head damsels and netted an impressive 10 on what was a very hard day which, had sen bank anglers really struggling.

On Thursday anglers had to endure the “mini-heatwave” with blue skies, bright sunshine, 25°C temperatures together with almost flat calm conditions. Eddie Mitchell best described it as “a tough day at the office!?”. Nick Louka did well with 7 from the bank though, followed by Simon Hill to sort out the buzzer feeders with 12 & 13 respectively to buzzers in Biggin Bay. Mark Close started in Biggin but moved round to Rainbow Corner & then the Hensborough Dam where the trout were also hard on the buzzer, He fished them on a washing line & took eight. The rod average for the day rose to 3.77

It seemed as if the whole fish population had been waiting for Friday to properly come on the feed as both boat & bank anglers enjoyed fine sport. Tony Broadway caught 11 on his buzzers closely followed by Jude Tuffs with 8.  Of particular note were the 8 anglers in the Guy Nicholson group whose combined tally exceeded 200, mainly to buzzer patterns! A lot of the boat anglers were out practising for the following day’s AMFC match with many well into double figures & Julian Weddle commenting on how they had literally located fish “everywhere”!  It was good to host the Royal Navy event led by Simon Lewis who were well into the sport. Their 18 anglers netted a total of 176 for a rod average of 9.77 with fish coming to washing lined buzzer on midge tips but others using pulling tactics with cat boobies on Di7s to great effect.

Saturday’s AMFC Spring match saw the whole fleet out on the water for the event. It was a hot, bright start for the competitors with NW winds. The fishing was far harder than the practise day bonanza & teams were having to work hard for their results. However, Toft, Cornfield & Biggin all produced, and fish were also in numbers up in Rainbow Corner & along the Hensborough bank. Whilst many searched for their fish inshore, a few also discovered numbers of fish feeding hard out over open water. Sixty anglers competed & 241 rainbows were taken representing a 4.01 rod average. Our congratulations go to Invicta “A” as Group 1 winners, Bewl Bridge FC “A” for Group 2 with Invicta FFC “B” taking top honours in Group 3. Individual best bag went to Vince Howley representing Hanningfield FA with 20lbs 5oz. Fish Hawks Phil Thomas landed the best fish of the event with a 4lbs 8oz rainbow. The sole boat on the water not involved with the match was that of regulars Jim Dempsey & Ifor Jones who stuck to their usual rudder tactics with Di7&8 lines over deep water. They enjoyed a great day with 16 & 14 rainbows respectively many of which were wintered. The bank rods also found sport with Tony Harris landing 15 including a 2lbs 8oz blue. Martyn Hancox took five on buzzers, mainly from the Swan’s Nest

We held a Troutmasters “Fish-Off” on the bank on Sunday fished to a 4-fish limit plus time bonus. Ounces separated 1st, 2nd & 3rd with Chris Traverse from Warrington taking the honour of a place in the final later in the year. Despite gusting conditions on a WSW wind, he went back out to Toft, stuck to his buzzer team & ended the day with a total of 16. Out in the boats were the LDFFA who all caught well with Ian Bradfield their top rod with 12. Season rod Paul Mitchell shared a boat with Tim Burn and enjoyed a “Great Day” using Fabs & buzzers with 47 to the boat. During a mid-day session afloat Scott Graham also did extremely well with more than 30 to his two mini booby set-up pulled on a Di3 in Biggin Bay

Draycote Water Fishing report w/e Sunday 15th April 2018.

Telephone Number 01788 812018

Report

Yet another week of unsettled weather with some cold starts, showers and windy conditions. The temperatures warmed up towards the end of the week with many anglers reporting large buzzer hatches out on the water, particularly in biggin bay and around croft shoal. Whilst a lot of fish were caught on sinking lines with blobs and boobies a number of anglers had great success on buzzers and some even reported catching fish on dries.

This week saw 311 rods land 1137 fish to give us a weekly rod average of 3.6.

Monday started calm and overcast and looked like good fishing conditions. The rod average came out at 6.4 and proved to be a good day for the bank anglers. Alan Bettles landed 28 fish from the cornfield on a white and green lure. Ian Richardson caught 20 fish from the bank using damsels, diawl bachs and a FAB, and remarked on “A red letter day”. Mark Edwards caught 13 fish from the bank on damsels and buzzers. Draycote regular Orhan Aliosman went trout fishing, and caught 2 pike. Another regular Peter Biernaki caught 15 fish during an evening session in the cornfield, all on black buzzer.

On Tuesday both boat and bank anglers reported lots of fish moving in toft and along the north shore from Grays barn up to Biggin Bay. It turned out to be quite a challenging day all round with fish mainly falling to small black buzzers and damsels. Season permit holder John Dews caught 26 fish from the bank at various points along the north shore. Norman Perkins caught 12 fish from the bank on black buzzers. Kevin Rees had 16 fish from the bank, again on buzzers. The boat pairing of Lee Pattern and Peter Elliott had 13 fish between them.

A chilly north, north easterly wind greeted us on Wednesday morning with the more comfortable fishing to be found along the cornfield and in Biggin Bay. Great clouds of buzzer hatches could be seen along the Farnborough dam with anglers reporting literally thousands of buzzers on the surface of the water. The fishing however turned out to be difficult with quite a number of anglers jotting down a nil return. Those that did catch reported a difficult day with plenty of fish seen moving but few fish to the net. Season permit holder Colin Grainger caught 3 fish from the bank. Dennis Tidmarsh faired better netting 6 fish from the bank. Out on the boats the pairing of Colin England and Tony Plumber caught 8 fish between them.

Thursday had a wet start, with a cold northerly breeze accompanied by a persistent drizzle which didn’t ease off for some time. The returns were slightly better with Tony Broadway kicking off proceedings on 15 from the bank. Season permit holder Peter Fisher caught 8 fish from a boat on black and green lures. Ian Richardson had “Another cracking day” on the bank with 11 fish falling to diawl bachs and buzzers. Mr P Foster did well from a boat, netting 18 fish, again on buzzers. Thursday also saw 14 members of the Civil Service take to the water for a competition in which they netted 43 fish for a rod average of 3.1. Taking top honours on the competition was season ticket holder Lee Patten who landed 14 fish on sinking lines and boobies. In second place was another season ticket holder Peter Elliott, who had 12 fish. Both anglers had been neck and neck all day until Lee landed a double hook up on his final cast. The pair found the fish drifting across the middle of Biggin Bay. Also taking to the water was Guiding and Tuition Manager Tom Bird with his client Mr David Holding, for a 4-hour morning session. In this time David managed 8 trout with 4 coming to buzzers in Biggin Bay, before a move over to Croft shoal produced the next four using boobies cast at moving fish. Also, out on the water was inhouse guide Lee Henfrey with season permit holder John O’Hara. John enjoyed good sport in Biggin Bay on buzzers under the bung, before a switch over to the midge tip and a move to Croft Shoal for the afternoon. To book one of our Guides for the season please visit http://www.flyfishtuition.co.uk/guiding.

Fridays conditions looked pretty good with overcast skies and a light south westerly. Again good buzzer hatches were seen around the water but good sport seemed difficult to find. The Boat pairing of Mr M Moore and Mr G Clarke were however bucking the trend with 30 fish to the boat in dunns bay on black buzzers. Also doing well in a boat was Andy Lane with 13 fish to the boat on buzzers. Seasoned regulars found it difficult going from the bank with only ones and twos here and there. Tony Broadway caught 3 fish in biggin bay. Mr Ian Ashwell caught 5 fish from the bank, deep down on buzzers. Roger Davis managed 6 fish from the bank. Roger Kerrison had 5 fish to the boat.

Saturday started warm and sunny with a light southerly breeze and lots of buzzers hatching on the reservoir. However, despite the massive buzzer hatches it was blobs and boobies fished on sinking lines that ruled the day. From the bank father and son team of Nick and Martin Hollingshead landed 13 fish between them on black buzzers and damsels on a floating line. Mr M Braun also used buzzers at the Swan’s nest to land 8 lovely fish. Out on the boats Ifor Jones and Jim Dempsey landed 23 fish on the rudder with sinking lines and a mixture of tubes and snakes. Melvin Severn returned hoping to land another big brown, unfortunately  he didn’t manage to match the fish of the previous week, but he did land 6 lovely fish on a Di 7 and a tube. This weekend we were visited by the England Youth team. On Saturday they caught and released some 250 fish on a wide variety of methods under the guidance of some of the current senior England team members.

Sunday started overcast with a light southerly breeze. Again it was another busy day with all the boats out on the water and most of the bank spaces taken up as well. Casting into the breeze from the north shore was season permit holder Steve Gibson who, using small hares ears, managed to land 23 fish from close in on the cornfield. Mr Keiran Barnes netted 7 fish from the bank in toft on buzzers. The boat pairing of Mr R Dudley and Mr N Holdsworth caught 20 fish between them fishing close in on the north shore. Keith Harding and Mick Clarke ventured afloat and netted 34 fish between them on a variety of methods, such as a DI 5 with FABs and boobies, and a floating line with diawl bachs and buzzers. Day two for the England Youth team plus senior England team guides saw them net a total of 223 fish. All participants seemed to enjoy the day withonce again fish being caught on a wide variety of methods from a DI 7 and boobies to floating line and small dries.

Draycote Water Fishing report w/e Sunday 8th April 2018.

Telephone Number 01788 812018

Report

A cool start to the week Monday and Tuesday with rain and gusty cool winds. The weather seems to have broken and spring seems to have sprung with fantastic buzzer hatches and fish moving on the top to dries. Let’s hope that the good hatches continue and keep the fantastic sport we have been experiencing for the week. A total of 342 angler came, catching 1997 fish for a weekly rod average of 5.8.

A cold, wet blustery start to Monday put off a few  boat anglers however guiding, and tuition manager Tom Bird braved the cold early spring conditions with season ticket holder Ed Douglas. The pair were rewarded with a dozen overwintered fish to the boat fishing over Musborough shoal with 7 inch a second sinking lines and 2 humongous boobies.(We have the RIO In Touch Fast Sinker 7inch/sec demo line for you to take out and try call the lodge to book a RIO demo line) If you fancy a day out with Tom trying to land some of these fantastic overwintered fish, please call the lodge on 01788 812018.

Due to the strong southerly winds the bank fishers found conditions tricky and as a result opted to fish from along the near side of Toft. Season ticket holder Steve Gibson landed 6 fish all on buzzers from the Swans nest. Also fishing near Steve was Tom Flower who again landed 6 on cat’s whiskers.

Tuesday as another cold windy day with wintery showers at times, the fishing remained tricky due to these conditions. Although some anglers did enjoy good sport. One such angler was John Dickens who fished in Rainbow Corner from the bank to land 5 fish all on buzzers. It was the boats however, that enjoyed the best sport with K Coley and B Taft landing 14 fish between them on the boat fishing in Toft shallows.  Also, on the boats C Williams landed 11 fish mainly on cat’s whiskers from Toft and the cornfield.

The wind remained on the south for Wednesday with another cold overcast start with some rain around. On the boats Draycote regular Geoff Preston landed 5 fish in a short 4-hour session down in Toft using a wet cell 2 and damsels. Also fishing a short session but this time from the afternoon was season ticket holder Rodger Kerrison who landed 5 fish using a di 7 line and boobies. Out on the water from the boats were the Welsh Youth team enjoying a team get together session ahead of the Youth International held here in July. The 16 youth anglers enjoyed good sport landing 96 between them. The best boats fished down the Farnborough Dam wall on sinking lines from di 3 to 5s with a combination of blobs, boobies and cormorants.

Thursday saw the weather break with a lovely warm spring day, once the wind had swung into the south. On the bank Jude Tuffs landed 13 fish from Toft on buzzers under the bung. Also catching well from the bank in Toft were season ticket holders Lee Pattern and Peter Elliott, who both landed over 20 fish each on washing lined buzzers. Steve Robinson used damsel’s lures in Toft to land a dozen fish from the bank. Out on the boats James Scott and boat partner James Foster landed 28 fish between then fishing around Farnborough spit on dancers and blobs. Mr A Greenhalgh and boat partner Dave Heseltine enjoyed good sport from the boat fishing down the Farnborough dam wall with a white lure and then black buzzers in the afternoon to land 37 fish. The Welsh youth team once again took to the water on the second of their two days, again the best catches from the team came to a mix of mini lures fished on either di 3 or 5 lines in Toft and around Farnborough spit. Although several the team did catch on buzzers and nymphs fished the same areas.

Friday saw another day of warm conditions with winds from the South East, this wind direction meant it was near perfect conditions for fishing buzzers in Toft. Due to the mild overnight temperatures the buzzer where hatching straight from the off. Mr C.J Day enjoyed great sport from the bank landing just short of 20 fish on a mix of blobs, buzzers and cat’s whiskers. Stan Hillman fished the bank to land a dozen fish from along the Cornfield. Mr D Stowe enjoyed great sport on the last four-hour ticket landing 11 fish from along the Cornfield on a black and green lure. Out on the boats Tim Grove enjoyed great sport in Toft and Dunns Bay using crunchers and diawl bachs on a floating line. M Mathieson & C Critchley enjoyed a red letter day of buzzer sport landing 88 fish to the boat all on buzzers in Toft shallows, Mark’s words being “It’s the best buzzer sport I have ever had”.

Near perfect conditions Saturday saw the fishing really take off with 53 rod catching 576 fish for a rod average of 10.9. On the bank Mike Oliver fished the Cornfield to land over 30 fish on buzzers and pheasant tail nymphs. Mr T Beebe fished buzzers for the first time at Draycote and landed a personal best of 14 fish, which made the long drive very worthwhile. Mr G and O Cooper fished the bank to land 31 fish between them. The boats also enjoyed fantastic sport, D Middleton landed 34 fish in Toft using a small olive nymph fished on a fast sinking line. Season ticket holder Dennis Tidmarsh enjoyed a great day afloat with Rod Goldthorpe with the pair boating 55 fish between them on cat’s whiskers. Mark Hunt landed 24 fish using black snakes and viva in the morning before swapping to dries after seeing some fish move in the wind lanes with f-flies and CDC shuttlecocks being his best pattern. Neil Cohen and Nigel Angus also used dries to great effect landing 35 between them on bobs bits fishing for moving fish in the wind lanes. Kieron Thomas and Brendan Thomas used washing line Diawl Bachs with a black booby to landed 46 fish to the boat fishing down in Toft shallows. Iain Scott, N Brackenridge and S McFadyen 66 fish between the three of them while down on a three day package from Scotland.

Another mild night Sunday meant that the buzzers where on the surface from the start and the light winds once again meant the fish where up on the top. the rain did slightly lower the air temperature which did put some of the fish off from rising in the same fashion as they had the day before, but their was still plenty up on the top looking for buzzers. Bank angler Clive Wilkins caught a total of 28 fish on a variety of patterns. Ivan Cotterill, also fishing from the bank, caught 8 fish on buzzers. Draycote regular Yousef Dar ventured out in a boat to net 23 fish while Andy Lane, also fishing from a boat netted 17. Season permit holder Mike Garner caught 10 fish from the bank on nymphs and a mini cormorant in Dunns bay. Another season permit holder Jim Smith had 15 fish to the boat, all on dries. Lee Cheshire caught 22 fish from the bank on buzzers. Lee weighed in his 6 fish limit for a total of 15lb 4oz. Season permit holder Paul Walley caught 19 fish from the bank on diawl bachs and damsels, also encountering 3 double hook ups during the day. Draycote regular Nick Dunn had 25 fish to the boat on buzzers and dries. Mr C Massey caught 20 fish whilst fishing on the cornfield, all on buzzers.

Fishery News

Fishery Management UK Ltd Stocking Update.

Our trout suppliers have been in touch to inform us that due to the extreme cold, wet & wintery weather conditions experienced during late February & March they have struggled to achieve sufficient growth rates to bring enough stock up to the 2lb+ (900g) trout size for our Draycote stockings booked during early April.

We will continue to stock as planned, we have a busy April booked with day rods, groups & competitions, but expect during the next couple of weeks to see some fish stocked at a slightly reduced size than expected at Draycote with some fish being stocked at around the 1lb12oz upwards (800g+) size while our suppliers get the extra time required for enough of their stock to reach the 2lb+ range.

Hopefully with better weather conditions this blip in the expected growth rates at the farms will be rectified by mid-April.

Report

A week of cold blustery conditions intermingled with some heavy showers has made for some uncomfortable fishing at times. Nevertheless, the180 hardy souls who braved the elements this week were rewarded with excellent sport from the boats and bank. A total of 1474 trout were landed representing a weekly rod average of 8.18.

On Monday the bank anglers were catching well into double figures with Ed Douglas and Mike Oliver netting 15 and 16 respectively. Ed’s fish came mainly to buzzers with Mike catching on his Pheasant Tail patterns. Draycote regular Alan Bettles netted 13 the Cornfield on black and green lures. Norman Perkins, John Kirk and Richard Dayman were also on the bank and netted a very respectable total of 31 fish between them. Their best fish was a 4lb rainbow. Kevin Rees caught 10 fish from the bank and Ray Cramp caught 6 fish which weighed in at 16 8oz. Meanwhile out on the boats Jamie Scott and James Foster netted over 40 rainbows on a variety of nymphs & lures, mainly from Toft. Paul Angell and Tony Parker concentrated on drifts from Lin Croft to The Cornfield & had 31 fish to the boat on buzzers.

Tuesday started with southerly winds and a light drizzle although this cleared as the day went on. Jim Hall fished from the bank in Toft taking 7 on damsels. Roger Kerrison also bank fished catching 10. He experimented with a variety of different patterns whilst Roy Painting caught 4 & Brian Allwood netted 3 to buzzer tactics. Out on the boats Trevor Heseltine caught 9 fish, also on buzzers whilst Dave Malpas netted six.

A flat calm start to Wednesday with a north westerly breeze later but only a few anglers took to the water. Draycote regular Geoff Preston caught 10 fish from the boat on his favourite damsel pattern, whilst Steve Orton had 14 to the boat using minkies, Pitsford Peas and boobies.

Thursday’s anglers fared well despite a blustery south easterly wind and scattered showers. Most of the action was down in Toft shallows where boat and bank anglers alike were catching in good numbers. Season permit holders Peter Elliott and Lee Patten, fishing from the bank, netted 20 fish between them. Ian Richardson remarked on “excellent bank fishing”, after catching 15 fish on damsels. Roger Kerrison was also back for more fun & managed another 15 fish from the bank in Toft. Thursday was also day one of the annual visit from the “Paisley Patterns”. Ten anglers made the journey from Scotland for a three-day break with us and immediately started netting fish in large numbers. Over the three days the lads caught a total of 518 fish, giving them a rod average of 17.2 per angler per day! Although they deployed a variety of tactics, most of their fish came to lures.

Good Friday started with reasonable weather & good numbers of fish coming from Dunn’s Bay, Lin Croft, The Cornfield and Toft. Bank anglers Jude Tuffs, Neil Shilton, Paul Walker & Andy Lane all getting near or into the twenties with lots of fish coming to buzzer tactics, whether straight lined or presented under an indicator.  The Paisley boys concentrated their efforts on drifts along the lodge side of Toft & had a remarkable day with many fish coming to their mini zonker patterns. By mid-afternoon however, conditions deteriorated with the start of torrential rains although both boat & bank continued to produce. Despite the torrents the rod average for the day, with 40 rods on the water, was an excellent 11.2

The rains persisted overnight. This slowed things up to an extent on Saturday, although sport remained brisk as evidenced by the final day for the “Paisley Patterns” who netted a further 114 between them for their final day. Tony Marchant & Stuart Greenwood landed 8 & 7 respectively to their boat but it was notable that they needed to fish boobies deep & slow on sink rate 5 lines to locate their fish. Mark Braun was top rod on the bank with 8 to the net, followed by season rods Steve Gibson with 6 to his black buzzer team & Alan Grant with 5.

Guiding and Tuition manager Tom Bird kicked off his 2018 guiding season on Sunday with young George Clarke. At 10 years of age, George is the youngest client Tom has taken out. But what he lacked in years he made up in both fishing ability and casting prowess. During the session George hooked & landed six lovely fish and missed a few more. It was his first introduction to boat fishing as he looks to learn the art of boat craft ahead of the England Youth qualifiers here at Draycote on 9th September. If you’re interested in a guided day to improve your skills, from boat control to any particular method, you can book one of our guides via http://www.flyfishtuition.co.uk/guiding/ or by calling the Draycote Lodge on 01788 812018 to speak to Tom directly.

Paul Lloyd & Dave Pacey shared a morning boat on Sunday & located fish holding below ‘D’ Buoy & Dunn’s Bay. Fishing black lures and Cat’s Whiskers on slow sinking lines they matched each other fish for fish & came of at lunchtime having brought a total of 22 to the net. Ed Douglas spent the day on the bank in Toft where he experienced consistent sport to a team of buzzers landing 14. Peter Bierenacki did similar and a creditable one for the pot followed by a further 8 caught & released.

Although I had to scrape slushy snow from the car first thing this morning, the forthcoming forecast for the week shows improving conditions & temperatures, so let’s hope that that the real beginning of spring is indeed actually just around the corner.

Draycote Report W/E 27th March 2018

Posted by & filed under Reports.

Draycote Water weekly report week ending 25th March 2018

Telephone Number 01788 812018

Report

A very cold start to the week with cold easterly winds remaining and blowing in excess of 20mph. That made for a slow start to the week.  However, by Sunday spring was definitely in the air with temperatures up to 12°C combined with very welcome spring sunshine. This week we saw 228 anglers on the water with a combined total of 1134 trout to the net for their efforts. This represents a creditable rod average of 4.97 for the period.

Following the blizzards of the weekend, Monday arrived with persistent bitter 20-21mph winds from the North East. The weather meant that no boat anglers were brave enough to take to the water. Furthermore, ice and snow on the perimeter road led to a partial close down, with only Toft accessible until the afternoon following a thaw. Only two hardy anglers braved the winds but their efforts were rewarded with 4 fish each taken on midge tip lines using a hot head cat on the point and cormorants on the droppers.

A warmer day on Tuesday saw temperatures into double figures although the Northerly wind did make it feel cold on the hands still. On the bank John Hall fished the Cornfield to land 14 fish on a floating line and a Pitsford Pea. Also fishing along the Cornfield, but slightly lower down below car park number 3, was regular Jude Tuffs. She landed 17 fish using a bung with a combination of buzzers and a blob. Just up the bank season ticket holder Peter Elliott fished with a midge tip with a black and green lure to land 15. Out on the boats Guiding and Tuition manager Tom Bird took to the water with season ticket holder Ed Douglas. After a slow start they located the fish around the willows that divide the Cornfield and Toft about 70 yards off the bank. They fished with a RIO Intouch sink 3 line and 2 boobies for the morning followed by buzzers and a FAB on a midge tip later in the day. The pair enjoyed great sport finishing the day with 30 fish each. To book Tom for a guided session for this coming season please contact the lodge on 01788 812018 or visit http://www.flyfishtuition.co.uk/guiding/.

Wednesday proved to be a consistent day on both boat & bank with an overall rod average for the day of  5.7 from 26 rods. Whilst a variety of black & green flies, lures & boobies were still accounting for many fish, Paul Skelton bank fished with Pheasant Tail Nymphs & caught well, as did Keith Allison who fished Crisp Packet Black Buzzers & Diawl Bachs. Toft & The Cornfield continued to produce better than anywhere with best boat being that of Tony Parker, partnered with Tim Hooper who in a relatively short day, brought thirty to the net using small- black & green boobies. Thursday proved to be a tad harder again with bright, sunny conditions & just a light sou’westerly breeze making things difficult during the morning. Once it clouded over a bit things hotted up with bank anglers Alan Bettles & Peter Elliott catching & releasing eight each, Ed Douglas netted seven, as did Harry Dawson, who caught in Biggin Bay and up near the Valve Tower. Nice to report Eugene Hughes back in action too. He boat fished various tadpoles on a sink rate 5 line. Most of his fish came from Biggin Bay & he finished his session with more than 25 to the net.

Anglers found themselves contending with some very strong south westerly winds during Friday when most chose to stay on the banks. Vince Aronica took six on a combo of buzzer & booby in Rainbow Corner whilst over on The Cornfield Mr Peart presented a Cat’s Whisker on a midge tip to bring 13 to the net. Warren Langridge took to the boat & was rewarded with an eleven fish catch as did Mr Wallace who mixed black & green with white booby patterns very deep in Biggin Bay for a ten rainbow total.

On Saturday Draycote hosted its first tuition day of the 2018 season, the participants all had a fantastic day landing their first trout under the watchful eye of guiding and tuition manager Tom Bird. To learn more about the upcoming tuition dates at Draycote, Foremark and Eyebrook visit http://www.flyfishtuition.co.uk/prices/ for pictures of the newcomers and their first fish on the tuition day visit www.facebook.com/flyfishstore.   Saturday also saw Ruth & Tony Kirk in action back on the bank landing 9 between them on Viva, Woolly Bugger & Cat’s Whisker. Season rod, Jim Hall did well on the bank too moving around frequently to stay in touch with fish. His total of 12 fish to the net included a fine looking blue. Interestingly, Jim & Tom three Marriott shared a boat & they both had a blue each as well. The pair netted 10 & 6 respectively with their best fish all over the 3lbs mark.

The overnight change into British Summertime seemed to bring with it glorious weather. Whilst the bright sunshine & blue skies made for hard fishing early on in the day, the afternoon saw bent rods all over the venue with 63 rods catching 372 trout for a daily rod average of 5.9 Andy Ball described his bank session as “brill” having netted 19 to a variety of nymphs & lures. Kieron Barnes fished both Cat’s Whisker & buzzer patterns for 10 to the net from the bank off the Cornfield. Jude Tuffs returned for more action & netted a further nine from Cornfield & Lin Croft. Russ Rabot & friends bank fished at Lin Croft enjoying classic action to black buzzer & landing 26 between the four of them with numerous fish over the three pound mark. No doubt caused by varying water temperatures, Nick Lant commented on how he found fish on buzzers in the shallows of Toft but deep on boobies off the with Hensborough Bank. Karl Harman & Matt Osbourne enjoyed tremendous afternoon sport on a Last Four-Hour Permit. They boat fished at the Swan’s Nest with intermediate lines & a small pink marabou lure catching fast & furiously for over twenty rainbows each. Sunday also saw the Greenwell Persuaders afloat for their “Secret Pairs Draw” event. Twelve anglers fished to a four-fish limit followed by catch & release. They netted 81 between them for a rod average of 6.75 Congratulations go to the winning pairing of Lee Patten & Alex Urquhart with 8 for 17lbs 13oz plus ten C&R. Hot on their heels were Dave Kennell partnered by Tim Burn with 18lbs 11oz but just seven C&R.
