Fishery Report: Week ending Sunday 13th September 2020

Overall a busy week with 338 anglers visiting the fishery landing a total of 993 fish for a rod average of 2.9. With the majority of the fish still sitting high in the water, however, we have also seen the rudder anglers starting to drop a little deeper in the lines and being rewarded with some cracking fish.

Great conditions Monday with overcast skies and light winds, as a result the week got off to a busy start with a number of anglers hoping to catch some hard fighting tout. Draycote season ticket holder Peter Elliot landed 11 fish on a mix of daddies and dries from around Toft and also Biggin Bay. John Dickens also landed 11 fish drifting from X Buoy towards S and off the side of Croft shoal, he too used daddies. Fishing in a similar area as John, Kevin Rees used crippled midge and Bob’s Bits in claret to tempt his fish. Mr F Brookes & A Spencer enjoyed a “Fantastic Afternoons Sport” landing a dozen fish between them drifting from the Tower Bank into Duns and also off the Draycote Dam on a mix of dries and washing lined nymphs. Visiting Scottish angler Stuart Marklow enjoyed a good day boating 20 fish all on dries from a number of different areas with Toft and the open water around X buoy producing.

Another good day in terms of conditions with overcast skies but with slightly stronger winds than the previous day. As a result the good catches continued, on the bank Ian Richardson landed 9 fish. Using a minkie booby on the point with a mix of shrimps and nemo crunchers on the droppers, fishing along the Tower Bank. Draycote season ticket holder Brian Allwood also fished on the tower bank to take 4 fish and loose another 2. Bob Smith fished further down to the bank In Dunn’s & Biggin Bay to take the majority of his fish. With 3 coming from Dunn’s, 2 from biggin & 1 from the Tower Bank using the same cast as Ian with a Minkie booby and shrimps and crunchers. Brothers Terry & John Evans landed 16 fish between them all on dries fishing in Biggin Bay and also Rainbow Corner. All water season ticket holder Ed Douglas also landed 16 fish on dries using Bob’s Bits and crippled midge fishing around Middle Shoal and through the middle of Toft. Fishing with a washing line with 2 boobies and 2 Muskins, Dave Kennell & Eddie Mitchell landed 13 fish between them.

A cloudy start to the day, with the sun making an appearance at around 9am, with the wind remaining in the South West, which did later in the day swing to the North West. On the boats all water season ticket holder Paul Havard enjoyed a great day landing 6 fish on pink snakes on a Di 3. Although it was Paul landing his first ever brown trout that made the day a fantastic fish on 6lb 6oz. The brown came from drifting from B Buoy to Y Buoy and took halfway way between the two. Mr Sowerby enjoyed a good days sport landing 14 fish on dries, with Toft and Biggin Bay being his best areas. Mr Blackwood used claret Bob’s Bits in Toft to land 13 fish, with a number of other fish coming short to the dries as well.

A near perfect forecast with overcast skies and light winds, however, it was a frustrating morning for the anglers as there was not a breath of wind until 2pm. Gordon Bramwell & boat partner Ken Cooke laned 19 fish between them washing lining around P Buoy on a midge tip with a FAB on the point and nymphs on the droppers. Mr Paul Gillett landed 13 fish using a sparkler booby on the point, Diawl Bach on the dropper and then a muddler on the top dropper. Draycote season ticket holder Paul Mitchell landed 11 fish all falling to foam daddies fished around P Buoy. Fellow season ticket holders Dave Kennell & Eddie Mitchell landed 15 fish using a floating line with a booby on the point and 2 foam daddies on the droppers around P. Ed Douglas used dries to land 19 fish with the majority of the fish coming in the afternoon drifting from the back end of the Aerators towards P & X Buoy. Fellow dry fly fanatic Kevin Rees also found the fish in the same area to land 22 fish using crippled midge and bobs bits.

Friday was overcast with a good south westerly breeze. Bob Smith caught 7 fish from both the Tower Bank and the Swans Nest using Minkie Boobies. Ian Richardson also fished the Tower Bank to good effect netting 5 fish again on Minkie Boobies. Out on the boats Richard Ellis had 6 fish using Sparkler Boobies on DI5’s and DI7’s. Ruth and Tony Kirk ventured out in a boat to catch 9 fish on Shipmans Buzzers and Sedgehogs with a Fiery Brown Hopper on the point. Season permit holder Steve Orton had 8 fish to the boat on various patterns such as Daddies, Muddlers, Hoppers and a Pitsford Pea. Alex Campbell had 3 fish in a morning session pulling Sparkler Boobies on a floating line along the Farborough Dam.

Saturday was a bit bright throughout the day with a steady south westerly breeze. The fish are feeding sporadically on the fry and providing some great sport for both boat and bank anglers alike. Ivor Jones and Jim Dempsey had 13 fish on the rudder using various fry patterns such as Tubes and Minkies. Ed Douglas stuck firmly to the dries to boat 5 fish. Forresters Fly Fishers caught 22 fish between 12 of them to give a club average of 1.8. Alan Shufflebottom caught 9 fish from the bank on Crunchers and Boobies. 12 anglers from Cwmllynfell Fly Fishing Club did really well out on the boats with a total of 58 fish between them, giving them a club average of 4.8.

A warm day Sunday with temperatures getting to 24 degrees the warmest we have seen a couple of weeks. On the bank Draycote Fly Fishers hosted their Autumn Pairs Bank match with 12 members fishing, in the challenging sunny conditions. Winning the day was Dave Atkins & Brian Allwood who had 4 fish all of which came to cormorants from either the Tower Bank or Lincroft Point. In second was John Hanlon & Stephen Dewhurst & then in 3rd a tie all on 1 fish was Mike Nolan & David Rechtorik, Neil Berry & Mark JJ and Paul Walley & Keith Jones. Great to see such a good turn out by the club members in far than ideal conditions, details on the Draycote FF can be found below. On the boats fishery ranger Lee Henfrey & Nigel Keeber landed just short of 20 fish to the boat. The pair found that a Booby Basher Di 8 fished on the rudder drifting from the Cornfield into Toft, and then off Lincroft point towards the back of Croft Shoal. With Lee & Nigel landing some cracking fish all falling to tubes. Richard Walker also fished on the Aerators landing 9 fish using a mixture of minkies & snakes fished on a Di 6 sinking line. All water season ticket holder Ian Reeve took his grandson Flynn Lewis out with him fishing landed 11 fish using a black and gold minkie booby back drifting from the Cornfield through Toft, great to see more youth anglers getting out and enjoying this fantastic sport. Remember all juniors under the age of 16 are free when visiting with a paying adult.
