Draycote Fishing Report w/e Sunday 24^th May 2015

Has the weather been a bit mad this week or is it me? (don’t answer that). But what a week, we’ve had cold wet windy days closely followed by warm sunny flat calm days. It seems that if you’re coming here fishing at the moment, bring everything!

A weekly rod average of 3.8 shows that the place is fishing really well. Remarkably, as well from the bank as it is from the boats, The water has warmed up a fair bit but has remained crystal clear. None of those algae blooms that dog us so much at times have shown up yet. Buzzers and Red holographic dawl bachs’ seem to be the order of the day for most anglers but, if only just to prove me wrong, Lee Henfry and Nigel Keeber  weighed in 16 fish for 49lb caught on DI 7’s and tubes on Saturday.

The usual suspects of Tony Broadway, John Dews and Gordon Slack visited us on a couple of different occasions this week and all did extremely well. The best of which was Tony who managed a large number of fish from the bank including a golden trout of about 7lbs.

Other notables this week were, Mr Bob Askew who had a good bag on Tuesday which included 3 fish of about 5lbs. Season ticket holder Mr John Dickens who caught 11 fish in 3 hours on Wednesday on a black buzzer with orange cheeks. Regular angler Mr Paul Farrell, who had a “Good evening” on Thursday, catching 6 fish, using our very popular last 4 hour ticket. Season Ticket holder Mr Sean Hanlon had a good bag on Friday, on a mixture of buzzers and dries.

Draycote Weekly Fishing Report w/e Sunday17th May 2015.

Draycote has again produced some excellent fishing  this week. The changing weather hasn’t made it very comfortable at times, with sun block needed one day, and a pair of gloves and big coat the next. But all in all a good week, with gin clear water and fish moving around either in or near the surface, anglers from both the boat and the bank have enjoyed some sporadic, but excellent sport.   The fish seem to be concentrating on buzzers at the moment. (remember, you can use any colour, as long as it’s black) the best sizes being 12’s and 14’s.. These are also accounting for some good browns, particularly off the Tower bank, Dunns and Biggin  bay. Mr Roly Hill, one of our season ticket holders, caught a beautiful 5 ¼ lb brown on Tuesday from Biggin bay, using a black buzzer fished on a floating line. On Wednesday season ticket holder  Mr John Dickens, caught a 5 ½ lb rainbow using the same method.  On Friday Mr Don Roper followed up with another cracking rainbow of 5lb 2oz from the cornfield, yet again on a black buzzer.

Wednesday saw the arrival of the AMFC match and the Police Service UK team qualifier. Both matches seemed to go off without a hitch and despite the bright sunshine and warm conditions, anglers commented that the water fished extremely well. The AMFC caught a total of 218 fish for a competition rod average of 6.5, while PSUK caught a total of 55 fish for a competition rod average of 2.7. Well done to all those who took part.

On Saturday we hosted the Water Industries Game Fishing Championships, attended by 98 members of the water industry from all over the country. The preceding practice days went very well with a number of rods catching well into double figures. Saturday dawned with a strong westerly breeze that could have dampened the day. But as the morning rolled through this gave way to a mild but breezy afternoon with some excellent sport on buzzers, dawl bachs’ and small black and green lures. The Overall event was won by the team from Natural Resources Wales with 38 fish for 107lb 6oz.

Choice of line is proving vital at the moment. The vast majority of fish are being caught using Floaters, midge tips, or a slow intermediate but, a few anglers have had a lot of success using a DI 5,  washing line with a FAB blob on the point and a couple of buzzers. The line is then retrieved almost as soon as the flies have touched the water, thus giving the flies a chance to fish down through the depths and back up again just before the flies reach the boat. In the last couple of weeks this method has proved to be deadly in some of our competitions.

All areas of the lake are producing fish, with the usual hot spots hitting the headlines, Toft Shallows, Dunns and Biggin Bay, Lincroft Point, the Cornfield and the Tower bank. Boats using the rudder and fast sinking lines are also taking good bags of fish through the centre of the reservoir, with the best areas  being the Draycote dam,  Middle shoal, through Croft Shoal and down through G buoy into Toft.

More battling with seemingly incessant high west & south-west winds again this week I’m afraid. When will we get some proper May weather? Yet again, we lost two full days to boat anglers whose days had to be cancelled with more winds well above our safety limits. The few who braved the banks as an alternative on Tuesday & Wednesday all but needed to be anchored down & only ten fish were landed for both days…

Nevertheless the week had started really well with 62 rods on Monday netting a total of 370 for a rod average of 5.97. Leading the way were the father & son team of Brendan & Bradley Thomas who enjoyed “Great buzzer fishing in Dunns Bay & Toft” from a boat. Between them they netted 35 rainbows including a perfect 4lbs overwintered fish. Terry & John Evans concentrated their efforts in Rainbow Corner. Having realised that small, skinny diawl bachs & buzzers were what the trout wanted, they proceeded to tempt a total of 25 into the net. Terry’s best was a magnificent rainbow weighing in at 7lbs 2oz. It was a day for the boats however as fish had clearly stayed offshore making things extremely difficult for the bank anglers.

Although still challenging, bank action improved greatly come Thursday & five of the local regulars collectively netted a total of 43 trout equating to an 8.6 rod average. Buzzers again were on the menu with black being the predominant colour. Unquestionably, those scaling down to size 14s are reaping the benefits – especially with the resident fish in what are extremely clear water conditions. The rod average for the day with 52 anglers on the water was 4.9

Friday saw good sport on boat & bank alike. In fact regular rod Geoff Allsop excelled on the bank  in Dunns Bay catching 27 on a mix of bloodworm patterns, buzzer & damsel. With warmer temperatures fish reacted as expected & rose in the water column. Keith Jones & Gwyn Williams fishing emerger patterns from the boat netted 17. The rod average reflected improving weather conditions & rose to 6.3 for the day with 64 rods on the water.

On Saturday boat anglers had to be restricted to the western half of the reservoir during a brief return of extreme winds bringing with them an intense chill factor. Boat & bank anglers struggled as a result with the rod average dipping to 2.7 However, the week ended with a weather improvement for Sunday with the fish reacting favourably for all. A mix of buzzer, Diawl Bach, FAB Blob & damsel all appeared in the record sheets for the day which ended with 80 anglers netting 392 & a rod average of 4.9

Most locations are producing fish currently but daily hotspots have been dictated by the weather conditions. Some evening rises have occurred, particularly in Toft but there have been instances of tiny fly, including caenis hatches, which have led to large numbers of fish showing but angler’s frustrated by not being able to get them to take!

I like to keep an eye on their menu and gutted a large rainbow for a customer during Saturday. It was chock full of midge pupae together with some bloodworm. Two things were of real note: Firstly,  most of the buzzer were still alive & wriggling and secondly the wing pads were extremely distinctive –  highlighting why patterns such as the crisp packet buzzer etc are so successful.

Let’s hope that the rest of the month brings with it proper May weather. I’m sure the place is waiting to explode!

Draycote Water weekly fishing report week ending Sunday 3^rd May 2015

Unseasonal high winds have dominated most of this week’s weather which commenced with strong, cold, gusty westerlies.  These stayed with us for most of the week which brought bank anglers increasingly hard conditions, with fish moving out of the margins into deeper water. Most of the boats on Sunday & Monday were on the drift practising for a big event fished to International rules on Tuesday. Many found buzzer feeding fish holding at 10-15 feet down in the water column & a few were highly successful using Di5&7 sinkers in conjunction with FAB blobs & buzzer. In the run up to the event eight Scottish anglers  representing Change Fly Fishers rose to the challenge.  They booked a three day holiday break & collectively caught over 100 trout each day!

Match day for the British Police v Royal Navy & Marines + the Police  Fly Fishing Association Community Challenge Match saw the whole fleet out on the water in what proved to be another very windy and very challenging day with gusts exceeding 30 mph at one point. Nevertheless some cracked it again & in the Tri match Change FF managed to take top honours with 39 fish for 99lbs 5oz. They were followed by the English Fly Fishing Association with 29 for 82lbs 12oz. Third place went to the police with 28 for 77lbs 3oz.. David Moore caught the largest fish of the event with a cracking rainbow of 6lbs 13oz. The whole event was fished to a three fish limit followed by barbless catch & release. Best individual performance  went to the Police team’s Gary Haskins with a total catch of twelve trout. Lady luck was on his side as he also later won first prize in the after dinner raffle! Congratulations to Gary as well as to the hard work of the event  Organiser/Administrator – Calum Fraser.

Notwithstanding some good boat bags & numerous reports of excellent sport, Wednesday saw only two bank anglers out for whom conditions remained very hard. Thursday saw some good sport, especially on the buzzer, with numerous rainbows in the five pounds bracket caught. It was nice to see Kevin Rees on the bank & he showed the way (as usual!) with an eight fish total on buzzers presented in Dunns Bay in tricky conditions.

Thursday night into Friday saw a complete change in wind direction as a cold easterly took over. Once again, despite it now being May, the early morning saw frost on the car windscreen as well as in the boats & part of the pontoon. However once things warmed up the action began in earnest from the Cornfield, Lin Croft & Biggin Bay. Boats & bank anglers enjoyed good sport with a combined total of 571 trout for a rod average of 7.82. Twelve season ticket holders fished the bank on Friday & showed the virtue of their collective local knowledge by recording a catch of 114 – equating to a rod average between them of 9.5

Gladly both boat & bank continued to produce brisk sport into Saturday with lots of anglers reporting good results on buzzer, cruncher & diawl bachs. Two season ticket holders also commented on finding good resident fish out over open water whilst two bank anglers together on the Cornfield  enjoyed good sport to hot head damsels. Hywell Morgan, here again with us  this weekend conducting courses, was watching rising fish in Toft about 25 yards offshore late on Saturday afternoon. Forty to rods fished on Saturday & took 410 fish in total equating to a rod average of 9.7

Sunday dawned as a wet and blustery day with some question as to whether the boats could venture out. Returns showed however, that despite the poor weather most anglers did fairly well, catching mainly on buzzers, nemo crunchers and black lures, with a rather surprising rod average of 4.2

It comes as no surprise that once again the week has been hugely influenced by early spring weather conditions. The beginning of the week brought some delightful warm, sunshine yet by the end of the period it was back to chilling winds, low temperatures & early morning frosts.

On Monday boat & bank fished equally well &  regular Ed Douglas  described his boat session as “Awesome” . Both he & his boat partner concentrated  on Toft & netted in excess of 20 each on a combination of  buzzer & diawl bach patterns fished deep. Trevor Riches also had one of his best days ever on Monday from the bank at Dunns Bay & the Tower Bank. Forty eight rods shared a rod average of 7.2 on what as a really fantastic day.

Although many boat & bank rods got into double figure catch returns, as the week progressed conditions became harder & by Wednesday the rod average dipped to 3.1 However, come Thursday they were hard on the pull once more & 90 rods netted a total of 566 for a rod average of 6.28. Buzzer patterns accounted for many of the better bags. Favoured areas were The Tower Bank & Dunns together with Toft – which still seems to have been fishing better during the second half of the day.

On Thursday we hosted The English Police for their 2015 EPFFA Boat Championships. They fished to a 4 fish limit followed by catch & release with 48 anglers competing. A total of 372 trout were netted for a rod average of 7.75. Malcolm Naylor came up trumps with a 6lbs 9oz Rainbow to take the largest individual fish award. Top bag honours went to Nick Lant & Henryck Pycz who weighed in 15lbs 2oz & 15lbs 1oz respectively.

On Friday afternoon Rod Wilson got out on the water for his first trip of the season. He took 4 rainbows for 13lbs 8oz. He also released a further eight – all coming to tube flies on the rudder. Numerous large browns have continued to show this week too. Stan Hillman tempted an estimated 8 pounder from the bank on a Minkie and on Saturday Jim Dempsey caught & released two from the boat at 8 ½ & 5lbs. John Clifford also reported an estimated 7 pounder caught & released on a fry pattern from the boat near Lin Croft Point.

The week ended with mixed results as the fishing became much harder in cold conditions. It was particularly dificult on the bank as the fish dropped offshore. Many anglers, practising for a big event on Tuesday next ,found buzzer feeders at depths of 10-15 feet. I was shown a photo of an estimated 8lbs rainbow which was caught & released near Rainbow Corner. It had intercepted a buzzer fished on a Di7 at a depth of 15 feet.

Yet again I found myself scrapping frost from the windscreen first thing this morning &yet again the pontoon & boats were frosted. However – May beckons!

Report.

As always, the weather has been the main factor influencing the fishing this week. It has been unsettled & we have experienced a mix of extremes. We had high winds with a significant chill factor, frosty misty mornings, and bright sunny days with near flat calms. Nevertheless, although there have been highs & during this period in the consistency of sport, the overall rod average for the week was 3.96

We often overlook the fact that it is still early in the season & water temperatures remain low. That said however, the buzzer hatch remains very much on the rise & huge clouds of black buzzer can now be seen daily over the back of the Farborough Bank dam.Water clarity is currently excellent – it is crystal clear.

Whilst fish are still patrolling the margins & drop offs in big numbers, more & more are also being seen & caught over open water – particularly in the vicinity of the shoals. Early daphnia feeding is also still in evidence & a couple of specimen brownies have also succumbed to fry patterns. Loren Serrano, who caught an eight pounder last week, returned to repeat the experience catching & releasing a potential double figure brown which he took on a Minkie out over open water. Jude Tuffs found 16 fish during her hectic bank session on Thursday & Mr West came up trumps on the bank with a 6lbs 4oz Golden Rainbow. On Saturday, Mr Severn found his fish deep using lure tactics and weighed an 8 fish bag for 25lbs 8oz.

The competition season is now well underway. This week we hosted a Police Inter-Force Friendly & the Annual Civil Service Competition in the boats. At the weekend we also welcomed Thornton Fly Fishers who fished a bank event. Sixteen competed & caught a total of 68 trout for a rod average of 4.25. Top honours went to Mark Sturgess whose eight fish limit weighing 27lbs included a Rainbow of 6lbs 2oz. Congratulations Mark!

Contrasting weather conditions have been experienced this week at Draycote. The beginning of the week saw some beautiful spring weather with warm sunny days and temperatures rising into the twenties. Bright & sometimes flat calm conditions made for very difficult fishing at times. However, the buzzer hatch is increasing all the time with the warming weather & generally the venue fished very well throughout.  Unfortunately, by the weekend, we were back to howling winds which, on Sunday, were so severe that we could not allow the boats out. Nevertheless the rod average for the week as a whole was 4.7

Whilst  there are many fish still being caught close to the bank we are now beginning to see some good bags of fish coming out of open water, particularly in Biggin Bay and around G buoy & down into Toft.

Some shoals of fry are beginning to appear along Farborough Dam and around the pontoon area. It looks like we could be  in for yet another exciting season on fry patterns. Anglers are also reporting catching the odd fish on dries although a lot of those fish seen feeding at the surface have actually been taking the buzzer pupae sub-surface. This is mainly occurring  in the evenings down in Toft, and is probably why we are beginning to sell more and more of our ever popular last 4 hour permits.  

The picture for this coming week then looks pretty good. as anglers have been doing very well using a wide variety of methods. They have mainly been catching using Floating lines, midge tips or intermediates, with such flies as buzzers, montanas, pitsford peas, damsels or an orange blob. The prevailing midge pupa colour at the moment is black with many now in the “size 12” hook size.

Best Areas ; Dunns & Biggin Bay,  Lincroft Point , the Cornfield, G buoy, Toft ,and better late than never, Rainbow Corner when the wind conditions are right.

Best fish of the week was a brown trout of 8lbs3ozs to the rod of Loren Serrano whilst Paul Beasley was somewhat surprised to land not one but two Golden R

The end of March through to the beginning of April is a peculiar time for the weather, 4 seasons in one day, literally. We’ve had it all this week, hail storms, bright sunshine, flat calms and winds strong enough to close the water to boat fishing. I can’t honestly remember the last time we had such extreme and unpredictable weather.

In fact, the only thing that is predictable here at the moment is the fishing. Yet again, the fish are holding in close to the banks and drop offs around the reservoir, with reports of some larger fish being caught in both Toft, and along the Hensborough bank. The buzzer hatches are improving, with vast swarms being spotted everywhere, and some inevitably being swallowed by joggers and cyclists alike. And there was you thinking they were only eaten by the trout. 

For the last couple of weeks we’ve been reporting that the fish are taking buzzers or small black and green lures. On that front, nothing has changed. But as the weather improved towards the end of the week, so did the fishing. Indeed , some anglers reported, for the first time this season, that they were catching on dries down in the bottom of toft. Hopefully a sign of yet another excellent season of top of the water sport.

Anglers have been catching mostly using floating lines, midge tips or intermediates, with some using DI 5.  

Best flies ; Buzzers, black and green lures, dawl bach’s, shuttlecock’s or the orange blob.

Best Areas ; Tower Bank, Dunns Bay, Biggin Bay, Lincroft Point , the Cornfield, Toft shallows  and the Hensborough bank.

This past week the weather has been a bit unsettled but mostly dry, with the wind sometimes changing direction on an hourly basis. It was in fact , blowing hard enough at the weekend to close the reservoir to boat fishing. I must admit I was expecting this to dramatically change the rod average, but not at all. Those anglers who “ toughed it out ” on the bank still did exceedingly well .

This weekend we welcomed the first two of this years “ Beginners Fly Fishing Tuition days “ hosted by Hywel Morgan. Despite the weather the courses seemed to go very well, with a number of students bending a rod into their first ever hard fighting Draycote Rainbow. Well done one and all. More information on future courses can be found on our website.  

It’s no surprise to learn that the fish are still holding in close to the bank, indeed as reported on several occasions, anglers have had fish swimming around their feet. The best piece of advice when bank fishing here at the moment is, to check the water in front of you before wading in, as the fish may be literally underneath your rod tip.

Buzzers are featuring more and more as the weather warms up, with green and black lures, fished just a few feet below the surface, accounting for some good bags. Again reports of daphnia may require the use of an orange blob, whilst bloodworm are also featuring on many pages of the catch return.

Anglers have been doing very well using floating lines, midge tips , intermediates, or even a DI 5 on occasion.  

Such flies as buzzers, bloodworm, montanas, pitsford peas, damsels or an orange blob are working well. .

Draycote Water weekly fishing report week ending Sunday 22nd  March 2015

The week started with chilly conditions and a sharp northerly breeze, but as it progressed we had spells of bright sunshine and warmer flat calm conditions, particularly on Friday and Sunday.

There is no doubt that the fishing has slowed up a little from the mad start to the season that we had, but with a weekly rod average of 5.3, Draycote is still providing some very exciting sport for both beginners and seasoned anglers alike.

The bank is still fishing extremely well with anglers reporting good hatches of buzzer along the northern shoreline, from the tower all the way down into the bottom of toft shallows. Once again the fish are holding in close to the bank, with many anglers making the wise decision not to wade in before fully inspecting the water in front of them.  Whilst many of these fish are feeding on buzzer, some anglers have reported spooning fish only to find them packed full of daphnia.

So overall, the picture looks good for the coming week, as anglers have been doing very well using a wide variety of methods. They have mainly been catching using Floating lines, midge tips or intermediates, with such flies as buzzers, montanas, pitsford peas, damsels or an orange blob
